Choose CNDR if you want the round recorded without touching your phone, with or without an Apple Watch. CNDR detects swings and putts from motion, on your wrist or with your iPhone in your front pocket, and plans each hole around your own dispersion, for $79.99 a year. 18Birdies has caught up on automatic tracking, but it is Premium only ($99.99 a year), swing detection needs an Apple Watch, and without one it estimates shots from pauses in your GPS movement. Choose 18Birdies if you want Android, tournaments and leagues, an AI swing analyzer or 3D green maps.
For years the honest description of 18Birdies shot tracking was: take your phone out, mark the shot, put your phone away, swing. That is still how the free version works. You get GPS, a scorecard, a handicap tracker and basic shot tracking that you record yourself.
Premium changed that in 2026. 18Birdies now offers Smart Tracking and Auto Swing Detection, so a fair comparison is no longer manual against automatic. It is what each app detects, and what you have to own and pay to get it.

How each one tracks
18Birdies Smart Tracking is a scoring mode. It watches your GPS movement and, if you wear an Apple Watch, the swings the watch detects. On the map, yellow dots are watch swing detections and white dots are places your phone paused. After each hole you confirm the score, the number of putts and the first-putt distance, and you can move or delete shot locations that do not belong.
18Birdies is clear about the limits. Its Auto Swing Detection works only with Apple Watch, worn on the lead wrist, and is designed for full and half swings outside about 30 yards. Short chips, putts and unusual swings may not be detected.
CNDR listens to the swing in both modes. On Apple Watch it detects swings and putts from wrist motion. With auto phone tracking switched on, your iPhone stays in your front pocket and CNDR reads your hip turn to spot each swing, then saves the shot where you hit it. Putts have their own model. You can still add your score by hand, and the two stay in sync.
Stopping to look for a ball, waiting on the tee and walking to a bunker all look like pauses. Only one of these systems is listening for the swing itself when the watch stays at home.
Neither system is perfect. Motion detectors can miss a soft chip or count a practice swing, which is why both apps let you correct the round. The point is not a flawless record; it is how much correcting you do, and whether you need a watch to avoid it.
Plans versus recommendations
18Birdies Premium recommends a club, adjusts the distance for wind, slope, temperature and altitude, and shows how other players have played each hole. That answers how far is it and what should I hit?
CNDR answers the next question: where should the middle of your miss pattern be pointed? Before the round it builds a plan for every hole from your own club distances and dispersion. Each aim point is tested against the hazards around it, so the plan can tell you that a 3 wood aimed 9 yards right leaves fewer balls in the water than a driver at the middle of the fairway. Our article on where to aim off the tee shows the calculation.
What 18Birdies has that CNDR doesn't
18Birdies runs on Android as well as iPhone, so a mixed group can all use it. It has a large community, tournaments and leagues, side games and a social feed. Premium includes an AI Swing Analyzer that reviews your swing from video, and 3D green maps with contours and putt breaks. The free tier gives you GPS, a scorecard and a handicap tracker without paying anything.
It has also been around for years, with a support library to match. CNDR launched in 2026. If Android, leagues or video swing analysis matter most, 18Birdies is the better fit.
Price
CNDR Pro is $79.99 a year. 18Birdies Premium is $99.99 a year, or $19.99 a month. Automatic tracking is Premium only on 18Birdies. On CNDR the free tier already includes 1 automatically tracked round a week, so you can try automatic tracking before you pay.
